Homo Toxicus by Carole Poliquin was released in 2008. The focus of the film shows the interaction humans have with chemicals over a lifetime. The film draws out problems as well as affects these foreign toxins have on our society. The film also depicts the amount of power these major corporations have over our government standards

With the capitalistic approach current day corporation’s main goal is to earn money. Corporations strive to build up their business while pushing out local business and services. The method of externalization leads to pushing off problems to other third party a lot of times leading to lack of completion or solution to problems this has been seen with waste management. It is startling the amount of trust the public has with major corporations who are selling products that have been proven harmful yet little has changed.

Nike pays there workers 3/10 of cent of retail value on a product this division of funds is way off scale and needs to be more relevant to working conditions and difficulty of work. Posilac is used in quarter of cows that we ingest milk from, the drug causes unnecessary pain and discomfort for the cows. This causes infection in the cows utter the puss from this infection can leak into the milk that we drink. Yet the drug still remains on the market and is in one of the foods that we ingest daily. FOX tried to first fire the special investigators working on Posilac then tried to bribe the investigators. Next 83 iterations took place on the report to delay and drag out the report. Companies such as Pfizer, Sears, IBM, Roche have paid millions and millions for environmental and government fines. Recently the court passed patent on one man or company can control a species that is genetically developed is unbelievable. The courts essentially are giving corporations and people the ability to play god, who knows in the future how this will affect species such as pets.

Film makes me want to seek out the partnerships between corporations and military during time of war. Coca cola designed fanta orange for Nazis during World War II to keep afloat during the war. Companies like IBM produced punch card machines used by the Nazis to determine plan of action for prisoner’s whether death, work, or special treatment. It is proven that wars tend to generate wealth for an economy, however creative techniques need to be discovered in order to reverse this to discourage war.
This film is meant to attract to all audiences because chemicals do not discriminate we as a population are all affected on what is put into our environment. The film managed to target certain demographics such as females by focusing on hairspray, makeup, and shampoos. Yet many of the products we use as a whole population are affecting us as well as people on the other side of the world.

Although the film is able to show clearly what issues are however there is not much suggestion on what you can do to solve the problem. Even during a point in the film they show fresh organic vegetables and mock how they are even covered with chemicals and pesticides. It almost as if the film wants there to be awareness of how destructive the problem is and with the lack of offered solutions this ingrains that. However, I feel the film would be much more compelling if solutions were offered instead I came away with a feeling of hopelessness.
